Rapid Cotinine Test is an immunochromatography based one step in vitro test. It is designed for qualitative determination of cotinine in human urine specimens at cut-off level of 100 ng/ml. This assay has not been evaluated in the point of care location and is for use by Healthcare Professionals only.
Cotinine, the major nicotine metabolite, has a half-life of 24 hours and is detectable for several days after cessation of tobacco exposure. Measuring cotinine is the most reliable way to determine exposure to nicotine for both smokers and nonsmokers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. Measuring cotinine is preferred to measuring nicotine because cotinine remains in the body longer.
The level of cotinine in a person’s sample depends on a few factors, such as how much the person inhales or ingests. Also, the rate at which nicotine is metabolized and cotinine is cleared from the body varies from person to person. When someone stops using tobacco and nicotine products, it can take several weeks more for the urine level to decrease to a very low concentration than a non-tobacco user. Many things may affect your lab test results. Even if your test results are different from the normal value, you may not have a problem. To learn what the results mean for you, talk with your doctor.
