It is designed for qualitative determination of methylphenidate in human urine specimens at cut-off level of 300 ng/ml. This assay has not been evaluated in the point of care location and is for use by Healthcare Professionals only.
Methylphenidate, also called Ritalin or MPD, is a medication that stimulates the central nervous system in a manner. When used as directed, MPD can provide a person greater focus for a short period of time and even help control appetite in people who are dangerously obese. The most common side effects with MPD include: nervousness, agitation, anxiety, and insomnia. Other important side effects of MPD include: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, palpitations, headache, involuntary movements, chest pain, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and psychosis.
Methylphenidate has a relatively short half-life (1 to 4 hours) and doesn’t have the tendency to accumulate in cells the way that some other drugs do. The estimated detection window of MPD in urine tests can be 1 to 3 days.
